Clio Integration
Timing's integration with Clio Manage lets you view when you completed tasks on your timeline and suggest their task titles when creating time entries. This provides you with additional context for when you worked on specific tasks throughout your day, enabling more accurate time tracking.
In addition, you can also sync your time entries back to Clio as Activities (Clio's native time entries), ensuring that Clio gives you the complete picture of both your tasks and the time you spent on them.
Learn how to set up and use this integration below.
Getting Started
To set up this integration, first make sure that you have set up a sync account in Timing.
Then, follow these steps:
- Sign in to the Timing Web App using your sync credentials.
- Navigate to the Integrations / Apps page and click "Connect with Clio".
- Select the region your Clio account is in. Currently, only the United States region is supported. This must match the region you signed up with in Clio — selecting the wrong region will prevent the connection from working.
- Authenticate with Clio and grant Timing access to your account. If you have the Connect edition of Timing, you can also enable the option to sync your time entries back to Clio.
- Decide whether you want to import tasks from all matters or only specific ones, giving you control over which tasks appear on your timeline.
- Wait for the import and sync to complete (may take up to 10 minutes).
- In Timing, you will now see on the timeline when you completed a task in Clio. And when you create a new time entry in Timing, you can select your Clio tasks in the auto-complete list.
- If you have enabled the option to sync your time entries back to Clio, create a time entry in this fashion and wait about 10 minutes for the time entry to appear as an Activity in Clio.
What Gets Imported
Matters
Timing imports all open and pending matters from your Clio account. Each matter becomes a container in Timing that groups the tasks within it. Closed matters are not imported.
Tasks
Within each matter, Timing imports all tasks that are assigned to you. Tasks that are not assigned to you, or that are not associated with any matter, are not imported.
Time Entry Sync
When time entry sync is enabled, Timing creates Activities (Clio's native time entries) for each time entry you track against a Clio task. The Activity includes the date, duration, and a note composed from the time entry's title and notes.
Time entries are synced as a 1:1 mapping: each Timing time entry becomes one Clio Activity. When you update or delete a time entry in Timing, the corresponding Clio Activity is updated or deleted accordingly.
Billable Time Tracking
Timing can automatically set the billable status on Activities when syncing to Clio.
If you have billing status tracking enabled in Timing, the billing status you set on a time entry is automatically used when syncing to Clio:
- Billable, Billed, or Paid → the Clio Activity is marked as billable.
- Not Billable → the Clio Activity is marked as not billable.
- Undetermined or no billing status set → the billable field is left unset, so Clio uses the matter's default billability setting.
Troubleshooting
I don't see some of my Clio tasks in Timing
Timing only imports tasks that are assigned to you and belong to an open or pending matter. If a task is not assigned to you, or its matter is closed, it will not appear in Timing. Additionally, tasks that are not associated with any matter are not imported.
My time entries are not appearing in Clio
Make sure that time entry sync is enabled in your integration settings. After creating or updating a time entry in Timing, it may take up to 15 minutes for the Activity to appear or update in Clio.
