Linear Integration

Timing's integration with Linear lets you view when you completed issues on your timeline and suggest their issue titles when creating time entries. This provides you with additional context for when you worked on specific issues throughout your day, enabling more accurate time tracking.

In addition, with Timing's Connect edition, you can also sync your time entries back to Linear as issue attachments, ensuring that Linear gives you the complete picture of both your issues and the time you spent on them.

Learn how to set up and use this integration below.

Getting Started

To set up this integration, first make sure that you have set up a sync account in Timing.

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Timing Web App using your sync credentials.
  2. Navigate to the Integrations / Apps page and click "Connect with Linear".
  3. Authenticate with Linear and select the organization you want to connect. If you belong to multiple Linear organizations, make sure to select the right one on the consent screen.
  4. Select which teams and projects you want to import issues from. All teams and projects are selected by default. You can change this later from the integration settings page. If you have the Connect edition of Timing, you can also enable the option to sync your time entries back to Linear.
  5. Wait for the import and sync to complete (may take up to 10 minutes).
  6. In Timing, you will now see on the timeline when you completed an issue in Linear. And when you create a new time entry in Timing, you can select your Linear issues in the auto-complete list.
  7. If you have enabled the option to sync your time entries back to Linear, create a time entry in this fashion and wait about 10 minutes for the time entry to appear as an attachment on the Linear issue.

How Time Entry Sync Works

When time entry sync is enabled, Timing creates an attachment on each Linear issue that has linked time entries. The attachment shows a summary of all your tracked time for that issue, including a table with the duration, time range, title, and notes for each entry. The attachment updates automatically whenever your time entries change.

If you remove all time entries linked to a Linear issue, the attachment is automatically deleted from the issue.

Which Issues Are Imported?

Timing imports all issues assigned to you across all teams and projects in your connected Linear organization. If an issue belongs to a Linear project, it is grouped under that project; otherwise, it falls back to its team. You can hide specific teams or projects from the integration settings page to control which issues are imported.

Note: if you hide a project, issues belonging to that project will not be imported, even if their team is still visible.

Troubleshooting

I don't see some of my Linear issues in Timing

Timing only imports issues that are assigned to you. If an issue is not assigned to you, or was recently reassigned, it may take up to 15 minutes for the change to be reflected in Timing.

My time entries are not appearing on Linear issues

Make sure that time entry sync is enabled in your integration settings. After creating or updating a time entry in Timing, it may take up to 15 minutes for the attachment to appear or update on the Linear issue.
